How to Dress for Extended Family Photos | Roseville Photography Guide

Family

As a photographer specializing in Roseville photography, I know how much of a difference clothing choices can make in the final gallery. When everyone shows up feeling confident, coordinated, and comfortable, the photos radiate that energy. When you’re planning a session with your entire extended family—grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and all the kids—it’s easy to get overwhelmed by the logistics, especially when it comes to outfits.

For this session, I brought several dresses from my client wardrobe with me, and it made all the difference. The women arrived early, browsed through a curated selection of dresses, and used my pop-up changing pod to try on their favorites. We chose outfits that complemented each other in tone and texture, creating a beautifully cohesive and elevated look—without the stress of planning outfits for 19 people in advance (yes, 19 people!).

We photographed this beautiful extended family session at the Flower Farm Inn in Loomis, CA—an ideal setting with charming gardens, wide open space, and that warm glow we love for golden hour portraits. This location is so lovely for portraits – I’ll link their contact info below. Its a great location for anyone looking for a a Roseville photography portrait session.

What is Extended Family Photography? Guidance from a Roseville Photographer.

Extended family sessions include multiple generations and multiple family units all coming together in one photo experience. These sessions are almost always held outdoors to accommodate larger groups and offer more variety in backdrops.

My sessions are relaxed and natural, with just the right amount of gentle direction. I guide you into groupings and offer posing help when needed—but I also leave space for spontaneous hugs, cousin giggles, and sweet grandparent moments. Since these sessions are usually in motion, especially with little ones, comfortable and coordinated outfits make a big difference.

Tips for Dressing the Family for a Roseville Photography Session

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Choose 3–4 complementary colors (neutrals always work!) and mix different tones and textures. This allows each person to feel like themselves while keeping the group cohesive.

Avoid Distracting Patterns

Loud florals, big logos, and neon colors can take away from the emotion of the photo. Stick with subtle prints, solids, and classic pieces that will stand the test of time.

Embrace Texture and Layers

Knit cardigans, gauzy wraps, or linen dresses add depth to your portraits and give your photos a bit of visual softness—especially in outdoor light.

Outfit Ideas for Mom

Moms and grandmas often feel the most pressure to “get it right,” which is why I bring a curated wardrobe to extended family sessions. Think flowing dresses in forgiving fabrics, soft tones, and flattering cuts. These pieces are meant to move beautifully and photograph even better. Every woman in this session walked away feeling beautiful and confident—and that truly shines through in the final images.

I also want to make a quick side note that I’m participating in a blog circle this month, and at the end of this post I’ll be linking to an incredible maternity session from another photographer. Be sure to check it out!

Outfit Ideas for Dad

Dads look best in clothes that are polished but comfortable. Think button-ups, henleys, chinos or well-fitted jeans in coordinating tones. Keeping things simple, neutral, and tailored goes a long way.

Outfit Ideas for Baby

Babies always look sweet in soft knits, rompers, or classic one-pieces. Stick with soft colors or gentle patterns, and don’t forget a backup in case of a surprise spit-up or diaper incident.

Outfit Ideas for Siblings

Older siblings can mirror the adults in style and color. I always recommend giving them a few outfit choices so they feel involved but still fit the overall aesthetic. And remember—comfort is key, especially for active kiddos who love to run and play during our session!

Final Prep for Your Roseville Extended Family Photography Session

Before your session:

  • Do a quick outfit check: wrinkles, tags, pet hair, and stains can all show up in photos.
  • Pack backups, especially for babies and toddlers.
  • Consider the weather and bring layers—especially for evening light, which can cool off quickly.
  • Most importantly, take a breath! Your only job is to show up and love on your people. I’ll take care of the rest.

Such great outfit advice, it’s hard enough trying to figure out your immediate family’s outfits let alone an extended family. This is such a fantastic resource for grandparents, cousins, aunties and of course mom who is probably pulling it all together!
