Top Tips for a Smooth In-Home Newborn Portrait Session | Folsom Newborn Photographer

As a Folsom newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I get from new parents is, “How can we prepare for our in-home newborn session?” These sessions are some of my favorites because they take place right where your family feels most comfortable — home. Every little corner of your home tells your story, from the nursery you so carefully designed to the cozy couch where you’ve spent countless hours snuggling your baby. To help you make the most of your session, I’m sharing my top tips for a smooth, stress-free experience at home.

Baby Prep — Setting the Stage for a Sleepy, Content Baby

One of the best ways to ensure a calm, happy baby during your session is to plan for a full feeding just before I arrive. A well-fed baby is typically more relaxed and sleepy, which makes for those sweet, natural moments parents love most.

If your baby tends to get dry skin (which is completely normal for newborns), be sure to apply a gentle baby lotion regularly leading up to the session, and again on the morning of. Soft, hydrated skin photographs beautifully and helps reduce any flaking or redness on camera.

Don’t worry if your baby needs another quick feed or diaper change during the session — that’s completely expected. We’ll take breaks as needed to keep your baby comfortable and happy.

Home Prep — Making the Most of Your Natural Light

When it comes to in-home newborn sessions, light is everything. The beauty of photographing in your home is that we’ll work with the natural light already there. Before your session, take a moment to notice which rooms get the best light throughout the day.

On the day of your session, tidy up the spaces with the best natural light — typically the primary bedroom, nursery, and living room. There’s no need for perfection! Simply remove visible clutter like water bottles, cords, laundry baskets, or tissue boxes. The goal is to keep the focus on your family, not the background.

I’ll also guide you on where we’ll photograph once I arrive — every home is unique, and part of my job as a Folsom newborn photographer is finding those perfect, light-filled corners that make your home shine.

Go With the Flow — Letting the Session Unfold Naturally

Every baby (and sibling!) has their own personality, and that’s what makes in-home sessions so special. Some babies sleep the entire time; others stay wide-eyed and curious. Both are wonderful.

If your baby gets fussy, or if your toddler isn’t feeling cooperative, we’ll take our time and follow their lead. We can pause for feedings, diaper changes, or snacks, and I’ll introduce new games and gentle prompts to keep everyone engaged.

A Note for Parents with Siblings

One of my biggest pieces of advice for families with toddlers or older children is this: stay positive and lighthearted. It’s completely normal for little ones to have short attention spans or moments of resistance. The best thing you can do is keep smiling and go with the flow.

Children feed off their parents’ energy, so when you stay calm and playful, they’re much more likely to come around and participate — even if it’s just for a few sweet moments. I’ve found that patience and a sense of humor go a long way in creating genuine family connections that photograph beautifully.

Why In-Home Sessions Are Worth It

There’s something incredibly special about documenting your family’s first days together right where life happens. In-home sessions capture the tiny details you’ll want to remember. The crib, the favorite blanket, the way your baby fits perfectly in your arms on the couch.

For families who value a relaxed, intimate experience (and who love the idea of natural light and authentic moments), in-home newborn sessions are such a meaningful choice.

Final Thoughts — Relax and Enjoy Your Session

At the end of the day, the best sessions are the ones where everyone feels comfortable and connected. Don’t stress about perfection — your love, connection, and joy are what truly matter.

If you’re looking for a Folsom newborn photographer who will help you prepare, guide you through the process, and create timeless images that celebrate your family’s story, I’d love to connect.
