My Go-To Workflow for A Newborn Session

Hi Mama! I remember the newborn days so well! So I understand that the newborn session is during a really delicate time in your family’s life! These sessions are usually happening anywhere from 5-14 days after birth. It is my goal to make sure that the session flows as smoothly as possible. I want to share with you the strict workflow that I typically go through to make your newborn session a breeze!

Wardrobe

At the beginning of our time together, whether the newborn session is in-studio or in your home, we figure out wardrobe choices. Mama might be trying on some dresses that I’ve brought along and Dad (or somebody else) is pretty quickly changing the baby. Baby is changed out of their clothing and into a clean fresh diaper then I will go ahead and wrap baby using the wraps that I brought. I also bring along the baby shusher or sound machine. I’ll have the pacifier (if your baby uses one) and a cloth.

I always recommend that baby has a bottle or feeding right before we meet together so that ideally they have a full tummy and they’ve spent a little bit of their energy in the feeding. A full and sleepy baby is just what we’re looking for!

Variety of Shots

After the baby is wrapped up and mom has chosen her dress then we are going to start with some photos of mom and baby. We’ll then photograph dad and baby, then the parents together, siblings together, and then the whole family. I also ensure that we get all the different types of photos such as family lifestyle, shots of variety of mom and baby together, variety of the whole family together with multiple poses, and then making sure that we get some really tender, loving moments. I like to also focus on capturing the baby’s features. We take these photos in mom and dad’s arms and then give a lot of time and attention to the sibling photos (if there are siblings). Often times, these are the big keepers for parents and a big priority!

At this point, I’m going to place the baby on a posing beanbag in the best lighting possible. Whether that’s in a bright room in your home or by the windows in-studio, I capture some solo shots of baby. I will then start to slowly unwrap their hands and feet from inside the wrap to get those details shots. Toes, fingers, nose, ears, and hair. All such precious details that you’ll want captured to remember these moments.
