Honestly, I know the struggle all too well. You’re investing in this beautiful artwork where your family will be the centerpiece, and you want wardrobe choices that won’t distract from the bond and connection captured in the images. You want your family to wear clothes that are comfortable but also photograph beautifully. The clothes need to fit everyone properly, and the colors all need to complement each other. Doesn’t sound too difficult, right?
Well, it turns out, this task can be quite a lot – not only in the time it takes to shop online for yourself, your kids, your spouse, and then wait for shipping, but also to convince everyone to try on the clothes at home, see if the colors coordinate well, return the items that didn’t work, order new items you’re hoping will work well, and wait for shipping again… It can be a big task! Here’s what I’ve learned from my years of experience as a family portrait photographer:
Does your photographer offer a client wardrobe or styling service? Trust me, with the time and money it takes to purchase and coordinate one-time use outfits for your family, this can easily be passed along to your photographer. Your photographer also knows things you might not, like what colors typically look best with their editing style or what type of fabric photographs well.
I almost always do this with my clients. Mom should feel absolutely beautiful on session day and is often the most challenging person to find a dress for. Once we have a dress for mom, it’s much easier to coordinate the kids and spouse.
Don’t shy away from neutral colors for these portraits! Neutrals photograph well in any editing style, are easy to coordinate with other colors, and don’t distract from the subjects in photos.
