In-Home Newborn Portraits: How to Know if Your Home is the Best Location for Your Portraits

Newborn

Hi mama,

As a Sacramento newborn photographer, I’ve photographed plenty of newborn sessions both in-home and in-studio, and I leave the location decision ultimately to you, the client! These are your photos and you get to choose the setting that will bring you the most joy!

In-home newborn sessions are simply lovely – there is something incredibly special about documenting this special moment of life in your home. You’ll be spending a lot of time in this space during maternity leave, and the location is definitely worth documenting!! If you’ve worked hard to decorate a nursery, you’ll get images that document that sweet space forever.

Not to mention the convenience factor – really though, not having to load up the car or worry about a crying baby car ride is really nice. Letting the photographer come to you does take away a certain level of stress.

Are you sold yet?

In-home newborn sessions really are great! But before you set your plans, here are some things to consider before deciding your home is the best location for your session:

  1. How is the natural light in your home? Specifically, in the nursery and master bedroom?

When I first enter your home, the first thing I do is get a quick tour to scout out the natural light coming in through the windows and glass doors. I’ll photograph in the areas of your home with the best natural light. This means we might be in your kitchen or living room, or in a gorgeous spot in the stairway that has that dreamy bright light you’ll love!! You’ll want to be prepared to trust your photographer’s creative vision for the best locations in your home.

The number one reason I recommend the studio option to clients is if your home has limited natural light and is naturally darker. If you’re not sure how your home natural light measures up, feel free to email me photos and let’s talk about it! Hello@kelseykrall.com

2. How do you feel about prepping your home before the session?

For those gorgeous in-home photos, you’ll want to make sure your space is decluttered in advance. Have the beds made and take the items off your nightstand ahead of time. Hide the diaper cream in the drawer. Prep the space to look as minimalistic as possible – trust me, this only highlights your sweet family as the center of attention in every photo.

Some families would prefer to make the drive to a studio than worry about tidying up their space, and that’s totally understandable! Imagine yourself in those early days with a newborn and consider which path sounds the least stressful to you!! We want to make this day as easy and enjoyable as possible. The goal is to keep mama, baby, and the whole family happy for to capture sweet memories for years to come.
